Does breast surgery affect your ability to breast feed?

A friend of mine is having a breast reduction later this year. She is due to go for a consultation at the beginning of next week to discuss the pros and cons of this surgery, but one thing she wants to give some thought before her consultation is how it may affect her ability to breast feed should she have children in the future.

She is quite a large girl up top right now, so it will be a big reduction (shes having it done due to back problems)

Any information would be appreciated.

It all depends on the cuts made during surgery, at her consultation her doctor will ask her questions about it.

She needs to discuss with her surgeon and ensure her milk ducts won't be cut during surgery.

It depends on the procedure. She needs to talk to the Dr about this to make sure there is no damage to her milk ducts. Usually they say it does not effect breastfeeding. I am not a Dr though by any means, just watch a lot of Discovery Health :)

Make sure she discusses the specifics of the surgery with the Dr, and mentions that she wants to breastfeed in the future. Basically, if there is an incision around the nipple, that creates problems for breastfeeding (cuts milk ducts and nerve supply). There is more chance of success if incisions are made under the breast (where the underwire sits).

There are always risks, and she may not be able to breastfeed at all, or be able to do some feeding, complemented with formula.

She should also speak to a Lactation Consultant prior to making any decisions.
